Chumlee of Pawn Stars – Goofy By Nature Or Acting?

LAS VEGAS, NV - DECEMBER 01: Austin 'Chumlee'...

Chumlee has no fear when it comes to expressing himself and letting the world know he knows how to enjoy life.

There was a Twitter post that may surprise some of the followers of the show ‘Pawn Stars‘ on the History Channel. Recently, Chumlee posted on Ron Paul’s website. He stated that “I have no idea who this dude is nor have I ever seen the show, but he has 109,000 followers on twitter, so he must be pretty famous.” Some comments from Rep. Paul’s camp were civil, but reserved. One person made the comment that Chumlee was a young 20 something year old portraying a goofy character on the pawn shop show. Now, that raised a question, is he portraying this kind of a character or is this actually how Chumlee acts in real life?

There is nothing that I can find indicating that he is acting like a goofball, it appears as though this is who he really is off camera as well. Not to be mean-spirited here at all, but some people are very laid back and just let life happen, accepting what comes along. This is how Chumlee comes across in every situation or episode that videos his behavior and antics. It would be fascinating to meet him and see just how down-to-earth he is without cameras around. Personally, I think he would be a lot of fun to just hang out with and enjoy visiting about whatever comes up at the time.

What do you think? Is he for real… or is “Chumlee”the creation of a savvy actor?

In a more thoughtful description, Chumlee has a way of keeping every aspect of his life simple and uncomplicated. Frankly, this world would be a little better off if we would not take life so seriously, let our hair down, and just enjoy the moments we have with family and friends. Why not?

So, if Chumlee happens to be “goofy” in real life, great; more power to him! Who am I to judge his character and take umbrage to his behaviors? This is his life and he has the right to choose how he lives, which includes how he behaves at any given moment. Mr. Chumlee, I support you as a person, goofy or not, and hope that the too serious people of the world can learn from the real example you set. It is not the outward expressions that matter so much; it is the lack of stress you exhibit and the ability to let the negativity slide on by.  Congratulations on your success, especially since you obtained it without hurting anyone, judging anyone, or being afraid to just be you!

So again, I ask… What do you think? Is he for real… or is “Chumlee”the creation of a savvy actor?

Rick Harrison – Buy Gold Or Field Work?

Pawn Stars

Pawn Stars takes Rick Harrison out into the field more, making the show more interesting by not spending the majority of the time in the shop.

Watching a pawn shop show has just so long to be a series. This holds true for any cable or network series; the lifespan is finite. Making the material interesting enough to draw a large viewing audience is something that producers probably lose sleep over at some point.

Even so, the current task at hand will involve understanding what the viewing public want to see. Are they interested in drama, action, mysteries, comedy, and so on? The answer is what will drive the motivation to create something bold enough and cutting-edge to hit those elusive top numbers.

An example here is the Pawn Stars series on the History Channel, their content cannot be about clients constantly coming in to pawn gold, pawn jewelry, sell a watch, etc. No, they have to really beef up the antics or drama; make it interesting for the viewership. Industry trends have been for many, many years to include some form of conflict with humor and at least one person being clueless about most everything.

It appears that the executives over Pawn Stars is seeing the need to get the show out of the famous pawn shop and into the field more. This means that, to some extent, the items being sold to the shop will be bigger, stranger, and more challenging to make a profit from after committing to a purchase. All of this can really create a whole new appeal for those used to seeing words flying, pranks being played on Chumlee, or hearing the boss (Dad) make off-handed remarks ensuring that everyone remembers who is boss.

I say if they find that appeal factor to draw in larger numbers and a different demographic, absolutely fantastic! Why, you may ask? This is what creativity in reality shows is all about, connecting with those who pay the bills and look for entertaining television. Okay, Pawn Stars, go for it and all the best!

Pawn Stars or Cajun Pawn Stars – You Decide!

There is more to the whole reality Pawn Star and Cajun Pawn Stars series than meets the eye. The camera can show just so much of what the actual shop has available. Viewers may even wonder if they really sell or pawn gold, jewelry, or any of the other typical items found in pawn shops across the country. A true and incredible fact about the newest location for a hit series in Alexandria, LA  is a shop that is actually called Silver Dollar Pawn and Jewelry Center and houses some 20,000 square feet of museum quality items. The impressive size and uniqueness of the items pawned or bought help it to reach a level few pawn shops across the country can come close to matching. Whether it is a tour bus or a group of school children taking a tour for some “educational” field trip, the place is a real site to see.

Pawn Stars

Pawn Stars or Cajun Pawn Stars...what is your preference?

Although the program is in its infant stages, it has received a lot of attention from the cable crowd. A response that was hoping to be stupendous reached outrageous numbers of viewers. The hope was obviously that another pawn shop reality show would grab a demographic that may not have been reached with the original Pawn Stars group; indeed, this appears to be the case.

Was it a gamble? Everything is a gamble to some extent, but this seemed to be a safe bet for succeeding. The down-to-earth attitudes and somewhat comical crew seems to hit it off well with viewership. How long this will last is anyone’s guess. As in most reality television shows, the kind of characters and their appeal will go a long ways to determining success or miserable outcomes.

At any rate, the experience one can expect if you happen to be in the neighborhood of the Cajun Pawn Stars is one of surprise and amazement. Seeing a small portion of the actual pawn shop on the television screen pales in comparison to what will be up close and personal when visiting the huge shop. Be prepared to feel the rush and excitement of being part of another Pawn Star experience.

Pawn Star Rick’s Book – License To Pawn

By now, everyone has either enjoyed or endured the Harrison family and their popular “reality” show, Pawn Stars! So it’s really no shocker that someone took the initiative to branch out the product endorsements and have a book written for them. Will you buy it? Me… I think I’m waiting for the Pawn Store malt liquor to hit the shelves! Or maybe the Chumlee microwave HungryMan entres!

Rick Harrison - License to Pawn

Rick Harrison - License to Pawn

Rick, his son Big Hoss, and Rick’s dad, The Old Man have very little going for them if they ever want to have a clothing line or a fragrance for men, but they DO have the knack for the pawn business. You might say that if anyone was born to pawn, it was the Harrison’s.

So, I think this book is worth a read, if only to really understand the inside track of the pawn industry. I’m curious what tips and tricks they have to offer. Plus… I can’t wait to read the parts Chumlee helped write!

Are Pawn Shops the Economic Barometer?

Well… Are Pawn Shops the Economic Barometer?

With unlikely popular television and pop culture shows like “Pawn Stars” that spawn the likes of Rick and Chumlee, you have to wonder why the attention is working. Could it be that pawn shops are becoming the economic barometer of these trying times?

pawn shop economyThis from http://www.pawnshopstoday.com/News.html“Reports show that the three publicly traded pawn companies reported significantly increased earnings during the last two fiscal quarters. A historic increase in gold value and the “Cash for Gold” craze have shown record numbers of people trading in old jewelry and coins for cash. Perhaps the perception could be based on speculation that in hard times, people pawn. However, there is a larger, more compelling story about the pawn industry.

The National Pawnbrokers Association goes on to report that there are over a staggering 30 million pawn store customers per year that frequent the hallowed halls of economic relief, and the customers highly appreciate the ease and quickness at which this form of lending works. It’s truly a win/win for business and consumer alike.

Because only publicly traded pawn companies are required to track their income, it is next to impossible to accurately track the industry. This, and the fact that the majority of pawn shops are privately owned businesses.

Here’s what we do know: The three publicly traded pawn giants have at least doubled their stock values in the last year. This statistic incorporates all of the business models involved in the pawn industry, not just the lending. And what it means is that the pawn industry is needed, welcome and thriving as it tends to the needs of those who the radical banking regulations are neglecting.

What are your thoughts on this. Does the pawn industry inversely reflect our economic direction?

WHAT DOES PAWN STARS, THE SHOW, OFFER?

According to Commonsensemedia.org, “Bickering, hard bargains mark show about family business”. The site goes on to comment that pawn stars is a reality series about the inner workings  of a Vegas pawn shop that provides an interesting look at capitalism at its most basic level.

Are the pawn stars good role models?  Yes and no… but mostly yes! At least according to parents and educators ~ The men who run the shop have a tempestuous relationship and they bicker often. Poor communication as a family maybe, but they are running a business here, and bickering is great communication for a reality show. Is it all real, probably not, we think that they play to the camera smartly. Hey, no one wants to see mature, intelligent communication on a reality show!

They’re aggressive salespeople who are looking for an edge in a deal. So, they are not unscrupulous,  they just push hard for the best deal. It’s not personal; it’s just good business.

Pawn Stars Hero Chumlee Reports Corey Lost 30 Pounds!

Pawn Stars

Image via Wikipedia

While the Pawn Stars audience is GROWING like weeds, Corey’s waist line is shrinking, or at least that’s what Chumlee says. Corey loses 30 pounds and Chumlee gains 1800 or so when he buys a $100K Maserati! Yikes! Times are good at Gold and Silver Pawn!

Pawn Stars catches the seedy side of Vegas pawn shops and that is apparently what people want! It’s nice to see someone use their success to improve themselves personally. Go Corey!

I guess the motivation is there, though, for Corey to “hotten” up his bod, after all the t.v. show is on fire! But maybe more than that, the foot traffic in the store is increasing dramatically as Gold and Silver Pawn has now become a tourist destination in Vegas!

So Vegas, how do you feel now that you’ve gone from Rat Pack to Chumlee! Only in these modern times could we see such unpredictable social icons.

On parting, here’s something to ponder, Pawn Stars is as popular right now with 25-54 year olds as is Jersey Shore! Chumlee and Snooki! I just had to type those two names together!

Rock on Pawn Stars ~ We’re watching you!

Pawn Stars: Cannons and Klingons and Knights. Oh my!

Episode: Cannons and Klingons. (2011). The History Channel website. Retrieved 9:08, August 2, 2011, from http://www.history.com/shows/pawn-stars/episodes/season-2.

An antique signal cannon from the 1980’s TV series Magnum P.I has the Pawn Stars off to the shooting range! Will the guys make an offer to the tune of 20 or 30 GRAND like the seller is asking, or will they decide this deal just doesn’t have the fire power? You guessed it! Check out the episode on http://www.history.com/shows/pawn-stars/videos/playlists/full-episodes.

There was a  lighter and photos from a “top-secret 1950’s atomic bomb testing program” that came into the shop, but I was skeptical of the seller… see how the pawn stars handled this buy.

My favorite Pawn Stars moment!

A Trecky pops in with a ton of signed Star Trek keep sakes and collectibles. What will Corey and Chumlee do? Go boldly go where no offer has gone before?
